Album:Skeletons From The Closet:The Best Of The Grateful Dead

The Grateful Dead was one of the most popular and enduring groups of the 60s to the point where they had fans called Deadheads following them around to all their shows. Their status as a live band is legendary. The group was started as The Warlocks by Jerry Garcia & Robert Hunter. They brought in Bob Weir, Ron "Pigpen" McKiernan, Phil Lesh and drummer Bill Kreutzman. A second drummer Mickey Hart was brought in later. Casey Jones was a big hit with it's obvious drug references and is from the classic 1970 Workingman's Dead album that went back to Garcia's folk & jug band roots. Skeletons From The Closet is a basic comp of their Warners recordings that's been around since 1974. The 2003 The Very Best Of The Grateful Dead is probably a little better as it includes some of their recordings on United Artists & Arista after they left Warner Bros. It's kind of surprising that there is no definitive Grateful Dead box set. Some of their live recordings are worthwhile too. The Grateful Dead continued to record and tour into the 90s until Jerry Garcia died of a heart attack at age 53 on Aug. 9, 1995. Garcia, Weir, Hunter & Hart have all recorded worthwhile solo projects too.
