Yahoo LAUNCHCAST song of the day

Artist:Ibrahim Ferrer

Song:Mil Congojas

Album:Buenos Hermanos

For most of his life, Cuban singer Ibrahim Ferrer sang in obscurity while holding down day jobs. He even retired from music in 1991. That all changed when in 1996 when Juan de Marcos Gonazalez of the Afro-Cuban All Stars convinced Ry Cooder to come to Cuba. Cooder was blown away by Ferrer, guitarist Compay Segundo & pianist Ruben Gonzalez and the Buena Vista Social Club was born. The album and Wim Wenders documentary made Ibrahim Ferrer an international star in his 70s. The 2003 album Buenos Hermanos was Ferrer's second Cooder produced record. It features several Cuban session musicians but also features Ry Cooder on guitar, his son Joachim on drums, Jim Keltner on drums & The Blind Boys Of Alabama. Mil Congojas features a string orchestra and Ibrahim's vocals are wonderful. Ibrahim Ferrer died on Aug. 6, 2005 at age 78. Thank you Ry Cooder for bringing the sublime music of Cuba and this wonderful vocalist to a wider and appreciative audience.
