Yahoo LAUNCHCAST song of the day

Artist:Stan Getz

Song:Airegin

Album:The Artistry Of Stan Getz Vol. 2

Stan Getz was one of the greats of the tenor sax. His career spanned several decades so it has to be looked at in stages. This particular version of Sonny Rollins' Airegin is from a time when Getz lived in Copenhagen and occasionally returned to the US to record for Verve. It was recorded Feb. 21, 1961 in Chicago with Steve Kuhn on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass and Pete LaRoca on drums. This recording is excellent but from what I can tell it was the only released track from this session. Airegin was originally released on a 1961 2LP comp called Stan The Man that seems to have a lot of odd tracks on it. Stan The Man has never been released on CD. This 2CD Artistry comp is the only other release of this version of Airegin. The two Atristry comps on Verve are recommended listening. Of course Getz would become a mainstream star with his recording The Girl From Ipanema but there is a lot more to him than that. Here's Stan Getz performing Rifftide with John Coltrane, Oscar Peterson, Paul Chambers & Jimmy Cobb.
