Trumpeter Blue Mitchell made some very good records for Blue Note in the 60s. He's somewhat forgotten today. He was born Mar. 13, 1930 in Miami. He started out touring with the R & B bands of Earl Bostic & Chuck Willis. But Cannonball Adderley spotted him and hired him for a recording in 1958. Mitchell joined The Horace Silver Quintet and stayed until 1964. Mitchell then spun off his own group which included a young Chick Corea on piano. He made several records for Blue Note including this 1966 straight bop recording Boss Horn. Musicians are Pepper Adams on baritone sax, Junior Cook on tenor sax, Jerry Dodgion on alto sax, Julian Priester on trombone, Chick Corea & Cedar Walton on piano, Gene Taylor on bass and Mickey Roker on drums. By the late 60s, Mitchell saw that opportunities for straight jazz were dwindling so he settled in Los Angeles and played on sessions. He also toured with Ray Charles and later John Mayall. He would record jazz occasionally on RCA with sax player Harold Land. Blue Mitchell died of cancer on May 21, 1979 at age 49.
