Gil Evans was a world renowned jazz arranger best known for his work with Miles Davis in the late 50s-early 60s. He was born May 13, 1912 in Toronto and moved to California. Me made his name as arranger for Claude Thornhill's band. Then he met Miles Davis in 1949 and contributed arrangements to Birth Of The Cool. He would work consistently with Davis over the next decade on albums like Miles Ahead and Sketches Of Spain. He also recorded occasionally with his orchestra. The Complete Pacific Jazz Sessions is a 2006 Blue Note reissue of recordings Evans made for Pacific Jazz in 1958. This arrangement of Charlie Parker's Bird Feathers is from New Bottle, Old Wine. Musicians are Cannonball Adderley on sax, Philly Joe Jones on drums, Paul Chambers on bass, Chuck Wayne on guitar and a bunch of horns. It's very sophisticated music and worth checking out. Gil Evans would continue to experiment with jazz until his death Mar. 20, 1988 in Mexico at age 75. Here's the Gil Evans Orchestra with Miles Davis performing New Rhumba in April 1959.
