Simon & Garfunkel came along at a time in the 60s when the lines between folk & rock music were starting to blur. The Sound Of Silence becoming a number one hit in 1966 was a big part of that tug of war. Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel were childhood pals growing up in Forest Hills, NY. The success of The Everly Brothers convinced them to take up pop music and they actually recorded as Tom & Jerry in 1957. That didn't work out and by the early 60s Simon was writing songs in the legendary Brill Building in New York. Things changed when Bob Dylan decided to electrify folk music. This was very controversial at the time but also very successful. Simon & Garfunkel had signed with Columbia and originally recorded Sound Of Silence acoustically. Dylan's producer Tom Wilson decided that the song was a good candidate for electric instruments. Simon didn't like the results but Columbia released it anyway and it made Simon & Garfunkel famous. They had plenty of hits until they split in 1970. Simon has had more success as a solo artist mostly because he's a great songwriter first. Garfunkel's a singer first and he's done some acting too.
