Yahoo LAUNCHCAST song of the day

Artist:Chaka Khan f/Melle Mel & Stevie Wonder

Song:I Feel For You

Album:Epiphany:The Best Of Chaka Khan Vol. 1

R & B singer Chaka Khan had the biggest hit of her career with this 1984 cover of Prince's I Feel For You. She was born Yvette Marie Stevens Mar. 23, 1953 in Great Lakes, IL and adopted the name Chaka Khan while working in the Black Panthers breakfast program. Her big break came when she formed the group Rufus with ex-American Breed members Kevin Murphy & Andre Fisher. Rufus had several hits on ABC Records but Chaka left the band to go solo at Warner Bros. while still under contract to them. She had a big hit in 1978 with the Ashford/Simpson song I'm Every Woman but she continued to feud with Rufus. She recorded the jazz album Echoes Of An Era in 1982. Just when it looked like she was through as a pop singer, producer Arif Mardin brought in popular rapper Melle Mel for I Feel For You. Stevie Wonder also guested on harmonica. He had worked with Rufus before. Rap was just starting to get mainstream attention and the song & video helped a lot. Chaka Khan's career petered out in the late 80s and she has recorded infrequently in recent years. She does a lot of guest shots on other people's records. Her most recent CD is a 2004 CD of standards called Classikhan. This Epiphany comp was originally released in 1996. Despite the name, there has never been a Vol. 2. Warners rereleased it in 2005 with a different cover. It has all her hits but no Rufus. Universal owns that stuff.
