Yahoo LAUNCHCAST song of the day

Artist:Sam & Dave

Song:Hold On, I'm Coming

Album:The Best Of Sam & Dave

Sam & Dave was an excellent example of how the working agreement between Atlantic & Stax really paid of in great music. Sam Moore & Dave Prater were singing the Florida gospel circuit individually when the met in Miami in 1961 and found they worked well together. They signed with Atlantic in 1965 and Jerry Wexler sent them to Stax in Memphis. Producers songwriters Isaac Hayes & David Porter produced most of their hits including Hold On, I'm Coming. It seems that Porter was in the Stax bathroom and Hayes was yelling for him to get back in the studio. Porter said "Hold on, I'm coming" and a million seller was born. Sam & Dave also had a great stage prescence but they hated each other behind the scenes. Stax's working agreement with Atlantic ended in 1968 and that effectively killed Sam & Dave because they couldn't work with Hayes & Porter anymore. This comp covers their Stax hits. Sam & Dave reunited in 1980 after Dan Ayckroyd & John Belushi started doing their Sam & Dave influenced Blues Brothers shtick. But they couldn't get along and split up permanently. Then Prater toured as Sam & Dave with vocalist Sam Daniels. Moore admitted that he was addicted to drugs in the 70s. Prater was arrested in 1987 for drugs and then died of a heart attack in 1988. Sam & Dave were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1992 and Sam Moore continues to perform occasionally. Here's Sam & Dave performing Hold On, I'm Coming with Booker T & The MGs & The Bar-Kays in Germany in 1967. The volume is a little low so you might want to turn it up.
