Though Joni Mitchell's roots are as a folk singer/songwiter, she has experimented enough with other types of music like jazz and world music to not be categorized as folk. She was born Roberta Joan Anderson Nov. 7, 1943 in Fort McLeod, AB. She moved to Toronto in 1965 and married folksinger Chuck Mitchell and started performing as Joni Mitchell. She moved to Detroit and after a showcase performance in New York, she signed with Reprise Records in 1967. Though her first record didn't sell, other singers had hits with her songs like Judy Collins with Both Sides Now and Tom Rush with The Circle Game. That's pretty much what happened with Woodstock. David Crosby produced her first record and got Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young to record it on Deja Vu. It was also in the film Woodstock and a big hit. Joni wasn't even at Woodstock. Her version is very simple compared to the CSNY version. Joni would soon stray from her folk roots and have more commercial success in the early 70s. She went on to experiment with jazz. You'd think by now there would be a Joni Mitchell box set but there isn't. Reprise released the Hits & Misses comps in 1996. Hits is supposed to represent her more popular songs. Misses is supposed to represent her less popular songs. Maybe Joni doesn't want to do a box set. Joni announced her retirement from music in 2002. She backed off from that but she hasn't recorded lately. Here's Joni Mitchell performing Woodstock in 1970.
