Yahoo LAUNCHCAST song of the day

Artist:Henry Threadgill & Make A Move

Song:And This

Album:Where's Your Cup?

Alto sax player Henry Threadgill has been at the vanguard of the avant garde jazz movement since the 60s. He was born Feb. 15, 1944 in Chicago and along with fellow Chicagoans Anthony Braxton & Muhal Richard Abrams has produced some very interesting music. He started out in the early 60s as part of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and was part of Abrams' Experimental Band. In 1971 he would form a group that would eventually receive a lot of acclaim as Air. Threadgill is known for experimenting with unusual instruments. In the mid 90s he somehow signed with Columbia and 1997's Where's Your Cup? was his third of three CDs for them. For an avant garde guy who is supposed to be difficult to listen to, it's very accessible but it's not commercial. I don't know whay a major label would sign him. Musicians include Brandon Ross on guitar, Stomu Takeishi on bass, JT Lewis on drums and Tony Cedras on accordian. That's right;accordian. Take that, Walter Ostanek. Bill Laswell produced the CD. Henry Threadgill hasn't recorded since 2001. It looks like he's been playing with violinist Billy Bang. Here is Henry Threadgill at the 2005 Pomigliano Jazz Festival in Italy playing and talking about his music.
