Yahoo LAUNCHCAST song of the day

Artist:Sonny Rollins

Song:I Can't Get Started

Album:A Night At The Village Vanguard

Sonny Rollins is one of the all time greats of the tenor sax. He was born Sept. 7, 1930 in New York City. He started out playing with JJ Johnson & Bud Powell but made his name with the Miles Davis band in 1951. He spent two years with Thelonious Monk and was with the Clifford Brown/Max Roach band until Brown's death in 1956. He's recorded as a leader ever since. A Night At The Village Vanguard was recorded for Blue Note on Nov. 13, 1957. There are two sets with different musicians. I Can't Get Started has Donald Bailey on bass and Pete LaRoca on drums. Rollins was one of the first guys to work minus a piano and it seemed to work well for him. Blue Note released these recordings on seperate albums in 1957 but rereleased them as a 2CD collection in 1999. Of course Sonny Rollins has had a long career in jazz. His latest CD is 2006's Sonny, Please and he does a monthly webcast on his website. Here's Sonny Rollins performing Weaver Of Dreams in Holland in 1959.
