Hard charging bluesman Son Seals was a fixture of the contemporary Chicago blues scene. He was born Aug. 14, 1942 in Osceola, AR. His dad owned a local club and blues legends such as Sonny Boy Williamson & Albert King played there. Seals initially played drums but by age 18 he took up guitar and was leading a band in Little Rock. But he knew that to make a living in the blues he would have to go to Chicago. When his dad died in 1971, Seals moved to Chicago permanently. While playing at The Flamingo Club in 1973, producer Wesley Race called Alligator Records owner Bruce Iglauer and held the phone in his direction so he could hear Seals play. Seals became a mainstay at Alligator. The 1980 album Chicago Fire is fairly typical of his fiery guitar licks. On Jan. 5, 1997, Seals was shot in the jaw during a domestic dispute with a former spouse. Then in 1999, he had a leg amputated due to diabetes. That didn't stop him. He signed with Telarc and released Lettin' Go in 2000. Son Seals continued to tour until his death on Dec. 20, 2004 at age 62.
