Oscar Peterson is the greatest jazz musician ever from Canada. He was born Aug. 15, 1925 in Montreal. He grew up idolizing the great Art Tatum and by age 14 he had a weekly radio show in Montreal. His big break came when Verve Records owner Norman Granz discovered Peterson in 1949. He started recording for Verve in 1950 and recorded for Verve and Granz' subsequent label Pablo for over three decades. Peterson suffered a stroke in 1993 and has recorded in recent years for Telarc Records. He's been in poor health lately. Telarc has acquired the Pablo catalog so they recently released this 2CD comp of Peterson's more recent recordings. Nigerian Marketplace is a Peterson original from the 1982 album Freedom Song. It was recorded live at Shibuya Hall in Tokyo and features Joe Pass on guitar, Neils-Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass and Martin Drew on drums.
