Luther Allison was a veteran blues artist and his hard driving style became very popular in the 90s. He was born Aug. 17, 1939 in Widener, AR. His parents moved to Chicago when Luther was in his early teens. He lived near Muddy Waters and was friends with Waters' son Charles. He learned to play guitar and started sitting in with Chicago blues legends. He made his first record for Delmark in 1969 and was noticed at blues festivals. He signed with Motown in 1972 but his records didn't sell. But he became especially popular in Europe and moved to France in 1980. He continued to record for small European labels until he signed with Alligator Records in 1994. Blue Streak is the second of his four CDs for Alligator and signing with them really revived his career in the US. Big City is a very typical performance and Allison wrote and produced it with guitarist James Solberg. Things were going great until he was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer and died on Aug. 12, 1997 at age 58. I'm sure blues fans know Luther Allison but I think rock fans would enjoy his music too. Here's Luther Allison performing Move From The Hood & Cherry Red Wine.
