For most of his career, legendary hard bop drummer Louis Hayes has preferred to remain in the background. But he does record occasionally as a leader. He was born May 31, 1937 in Detroit. He had his own band as a teenager in Detroit and joined Yusef Lateef's band in 1955. He's best known for his 1959-65 stint with Cannonball Adderley usually teaming with his favourite bass player Sam Jones. Hayes also had significant stints with Horace Silver & Oscar Peterson. He's recorded with most of the top jazz artists over the years. His occasional recordings as leader are always good. Breath Of Life is a 1974 release on Muse Records. Musicians are Tex Allen on trumpet, Gerald Hayes & Charles Davis on sax, Ronnie Mathews on piano, David Williams on bass and Toot Monk on percussion. Muse was a very popular jazz label in the 70s. They went out of business but veteran producer Joel Dorn acquired the catalog and has released them on his 32 Jazz label. It's worth seeking out. Louis Hayes continues to tour today with his Cannonball Legacy Band, a tribute to Cannonball Adderley. 2002's Dreaming Of Cannonball is his latest CD. He sounds pretty good for a senior citizen.
