Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Mary Wells

Artist:Mary Wells

Song:When I'm Gone

Album:The Ultimate Collection

For a short period of time, Mary Wells was Motown's biggest star. But she left Motown in 1964 and was never able to recreate her success elsewhere. She was born May 13, 1943 in Detroit. The 17 year old Mary signed with Motown in 1961 while attempting to sell a song to Berry Gordy. She worked with all the producers at Motown but had her biggest success with Smokey Robinson. 1964's My Guy was her biggest hit. When I'm Gone wasn't as big but is still very memorable. This Ultimate Collection comp has everything you could want. Mary Wells left Motown in 1964 when 20th Century Fox gave her a big advance and the promise of movie roles. The movie roles never happened and she wasn't as successful without Robinson. Her attempted comebacks in the 70s with husband Cecil Womack were unsuccessful too. Mary Wells continued to tour the oldies circuit until her death from throat cancer on July 26, 1992 at age 49. Here's Mary Wells performing My Guy on Shindig in 1964.
