Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-John Coltrane

Artist:John Coltrane

Song:One And Four (aka Mr. Day)

Album:Trane's Blues

Sax legend John Coltrane recorded a lot in a short period of time. It can be very daunting to try to figure out what CDs are worthwhile. Trane's Blues was released on Blue Note in 1999. 1957's Blue Train was the only album Coltrane recorded for Blue Note. Trane's Blues has a couple of songs from that album. It also has a few oddities. One And Four is notable because it was the first time Coltrane recorded with future collaborator McCoy Tyner. It's from a 1990 Roulette Records album called Like Sonny. It seems that Roulette took two unrelated sessions and put them on this album. One And Four was recorded in 1960 with McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. Capitol-EMI now owns the rights to Roulette Records and that's how it winds up on a Blue Note release. EMI repackaged Trane's Blues as Essential in 2003. If you have Blue Train already, it's probably not worthwhile to get Trane's Blues. And I doubt that Like Sonny is still available. But One And Four is a great song. Maybe Blue Note can figure out a better way to release it. Here's John Coltrane performing with Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers & Jimmy Cobb in 1960. It's actually the Miles Davis band without Miles.
