Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Nat King Cole Trio

Artist:Nat King Cole Trio

Song:My Mother Told Me

Album:Transcriptions

This 3CD box set will likely be a revelation for even devoted Nat King Cole fans. Of course Cole was a hugely popular pop singer in the 50s. But he had his own jazz trio for years. Many jazz fans abandoned Cole in the late 40s but the truth was that his style of jazz was dying anyway with the rise of bebop. Cole continued to record mostly with his trio and still wrote most of his own songs. This was all while Capitol Records had started promoting him as more of a pop singer. This box set consists of a series of transcriptions recorded from 1946-50. These were not released to the public. They were different more relaxed versions that were sent to radio stations. My Mother Told me was recorded in 1949 with Irving Ashby on guitar and Joe Comfort on bass. Blue Note released these versions for the first time in 2005. It's just the trio, no orchestra. Jazz fans are likely to enjoy Transcriptions. Cole broke up the trio in 1950 and his pop singing stardom continued. Here's Nat King Cole and his trio performing Route 66 in 1950.
