Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

Artist:Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

Song:Nobody's Baby

Album:100 Days, 100 Nights

If you listen to the music of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, you might think it was some lost Stax soul from the 60s. But this is new music and the CD was released last week. But the influence is fairly obvious. Sharon Jones was born May 4, 1956 in Augusta, GA and moved to New York City at an early age. She grew up singing in church and she and her brothers would often imitate James Brown. After an unsuccessful attempt to break into the music business in the 70s, she went to work as a corrections officer at Sing Sing Prison. Sharon always sang part time. In 1996, she sang backup vocals on a session organized by the French label Pure Records. When label owners Philip Lehman & Gabriel Roth moved to New York, they started a record label for Sharon Jones. The music is being sold as retro funk soul but the songs are original. The Dap-Kings started as The Soul Providers in the mid 90s. When Roth split with Lehman, he started Daptone Records with sax player Neal Sugarman. Nobody's Baby is from their new CD 100 Days, 100 Nights. I don't know if Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings will ever have anything more than a cult following but fans of classic soul will enjoy their music. Here's Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings performing on the French Canal Plus TV network.
