Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Andrae Crouch

Artist:Andrae Crouch

Song:Early In The Morning

Album:Pray

Any talk about contemporary black gospel music has to begin with Andrae Crouch because he paved the way for everyone in that business today. He was born July 1, 1942 in Pacoima, CA and started out singing in his father's church. In 1977, Crouch was likely the first to combine traditional gospel with contemporary R & B and his band included a horn section. And a lot of his songs are now considered standards. He also crossed over to the mainstream. He composed and performed the music for the film The Color Purple and did the arrangement for the Madonna hit Like A Prayer. He didn't record as much in the 90s. The CD Pray was released in 1997 on Quincy Jones' Qwest label. It was at this time that his parents died and Crouch and his twin sister Sandra took over their church so he spends a lot of time doing that. I see a lot of tributes to him on TV. He's considered a legend in the gospel music business. His most recent CD is 2006's Mighty Wind on Verity Records. Here's Andrae Crouch performing I Will Bless The Lord courtesy of his website. The videos on Youtube aren't very good.
