Artist:Ann Peebles

Song:Ain't No Business Like Your Business

Album:Box Of The Blues

R & B singer songwriter Ann Peebles is probably best known for her 1973 hit I Can't Stand The Rain. She's not that well known to mainstream music fans. She was born Apr. 27, 1947 in St. Louis. As a child, she toured with the family gospel group The Peebles Choir. Then as a teen, she started singing in St. Louis clubs and joined Oliver Sain's band. On a 1968 trip to Memphis, she was spotted by trumpeter Gene "Bowlegs" Miller and he brought her to Hi Records producer Willie Mitchell. Mitchell was building a stable that would soon include Al Green and signed her immediately. Mitchell put her together with songwriter Don Bryant and they got married and have been writing together ever since. Ann had several minor hits until I Can't Stand The Rain became her biggest hit in 1973. Ann Peebles is a fabulous down home soul singer so the late 70s rise of disco hurt her career very badly. Ann took a break from the music business to raise her family in the 80s. But then in the 90s, she signed with roots label Rounder Records. Ain't No Business Like Your Business is from the 1992 CD Full Time Love. Ann Peebles was back sounding better than ever. This 4CD box set Box Of The Blues was compiled by Rounder Records A & R VP Scott Billington. Rounder does a lot of these various artists samplers. 4CDs seems a bit much. Ann still tours today and released the CD Brand New Classics in 2006. Ann Peebles is an artist highly respected by R & B fans and her music is frequently sampled by hip hop artists. Here's Ann Peebles performing I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse down in Rotterdam in 1989.
