Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Bobby Darin

Artist:Bobby Darin

Song:Dream Lover

Album:The Hit Singles Collection

I guess at this point most music fans are familiar with the various musical incarnations of Bobby Darin. He was born Walden Robert Cassotto on May 14, 1936 in The Bronx. He claimed he got the name Bobby Darin out of the phone book. Though he had a genius IQ and graduated from the Bronx High School Of Science, Darin wanted a career in the theatre. He signed with Decca Records in 1956 but they didn't seem to know what to do with him so he moved to Atlantic Records where he wrote and produced his own songs. His breakthrough was the 1958 novelty song Splish Splash. Dream Lover was more in the teen idol category but Darin was more than a teen idol. When his star faded in the early 60s, Darin could have gone Vegas. But instead he got interested in folk music and Roger McGuinn of The Byrds played guitar in his band for a while. When he returned to the pop charts in 1966 with the Tim Hardin song If I Were A Carpenter, people didn't even know it was the same guy. He even released an album under his real name. This Rhino comp has all his hits. Darin suffered from rheumatic fever when he was a child and his heart problems are what killed him on Dec. 20, 1973 at age 37. I'm sure a lot of you have seen the Bobby Darin biopic Beyond The Sea. Bobby Darin was a very interesting performer in the late 50s. Here's Bobby Darin performing Dream Lover on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1959.
