When Elvis Costello first surfaced in 1977, he was classified with a lot of the other punk artists. He's turned out to be a much more diverse musician but his early music is worthwhile. He was born Declan McManus Aug. 25, 1954 in Liverpool, England. His father was British bandleader Ross McManus. Declan was working as a computer programmer in the early 70s and sending out demos. One of those demos got the attention of Stiff Records owner Jake Rivera and he was signed. Declan changed his name to Elvis Costello in honour of Elvis Presley and his mother's maiden name. He started recording with producer Nick Lowe. He called his group The Attractions. They were bassist Bruce Thomas, keyboardist Steve Nieve and drummer Pete Thomas. Costello signed in the US with Columbia and started building a following in the US. Peace, Love & Understanding is from his third album Armed Forces and the album went top ten in the US. Though Costello is an excellent songwriter, this was a Nick Lowe song that Lowe originally recorded a few years earlier with the group Brinsley Schwarz. This comp was released by Rykodisc in 1994. Costello's back catalog has switched labels a few times from Rykodisc to Rhino and now Universal's Hip-O label. They've all released very similar comps so get this one if you can get it at a good price. Elvis Costello has recorded all kinds of music over the years but I think there's still a lot of affection for his early music.
