Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Al Green

Artist:Al Green

Song:Let's Stay Together

Album:Al Green's Greatest Hits

This Greatest Hits comp is the perfect introduction to one of the greatest soul singers ever. And he's still got it today. Al Green was born Apr. 13, 1946 in Forest City, AR and was touring in the family gospel group at age 9. His family moved to Grand Rapids, MI in the mid-50s but his father kicked Al out of the group at age 16 for listening to Jackie Wilson. Al formed his own group The Soul Mates which had a minor hit in 1968 with Back Up Train. It was in 1969 that he met Hi Records owner Willie Mitchell and the rest is history. Let's Stay Together was Green's first and biggest hit in 1972. It hit #1 on the pop singles chart. This comp is a great intro to his music and is also available with a bonus DVD. Green would have several more hits but in 1974 a disgruntled ex-girlfriend poured hot grits on his back. Green saw this as a sign that he should enter the ministry so he bought a church in Memphis and he still presides over that today. Through the 80s he seemed to waver back and forth between gospel and secular music. He still made some good records. But his career got a real boost when he signed with Blue Note and reunited with Willie Mitchell for the 2003 CD I Can't Stop. He's currently recording with Amir "?uestlove" Thompson of The Roots and will have a new CD shortly. Just to show you that he's still got it, here's Al Green performing Let's Stay Together on Sessions@AOL Mar. 16, 2005.
