Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Mem Shannon

Artist:Mem Shannon
Song:Ignant Stick
Album:I'm From Phunkville

Mem Shannon is one dirty skunky funky bluesman and very much underexposed. You need to check him out. He was born Dec. 21, 1959 in New Orleans. He learned to play guitar as a teen and was inspired to perform around New Orleans after listening to BB King. He had a band called Free Enterprize. But his dad died suddenly in 1981 and Shannon took to driving a cab to pay the family bills. In 1990, his old Free Enterprize bass player Peter Carter got Shannon back into music and they started writing songs together. Most of Shannon's songs are about his cab driving experiences. He started working on demos that got the attention of producer Mark Bingham. He had worked with bluesman John Mooney. Bingham took Shannon's demo to Hannibal Records owner Joe Boyd and Shannon's debut CD A Cab Driver's Blues was released in Oct. 1995. He quit driving cab in Apr. 1996 and now tours the world with his brand of funky blues. He's a great songwriter as his songs draw on his working class background. Ignant Stick is from his 2005 CD I'm From Phunkville on the Northern Blues label. His latest CD Live: A Night At Tipitina's was released in July 2007. Mem Shannon is recommended to fans of funky blues. Here's Mem Shannon performing No Religion.
