Steve Kuhn is a classically trained jazz pianist who is known for his work in trios. He has a significant following in Europe. He was born Mar. 24, 1938 in Brooklyn, NY. He studied classical piano with renowned teacher Madame Chaloff and as a teen played gigs with her sax player son Serge Chaloff. Kuhn graduated from Harvard and worked for Kenny Dorham in 1959-60. He then played with John Coltrane but was replaced by McCoy Tyner in what would become the classic Coltrane quartet. He had significant stints with Stan Getz and Art Farmer, moved to Europe in 1967 but moved back to the US in 1971. Kuhn made his name in jazz with several recordings for the ECM label in the 70s with Sheila Jordan. In the 80s he led a trio with bassist Ron Carter and drummer Al Foster that recorded some great albums. Oceans In The Sky is another trio from 1989 with Miroslav Vitous on bass and Aldo Romano on drums. It was originally released on Owl Records but is currently available through Kuhn's current contract with Sunnyside Records. He also records as a classical pianist. He still tours the world and is very popular in Europe. His latest CD Steve Kuhn Plays Standards was released in Jan. 2008 by the Japanese Venus label. He still records for Sunnyside in the US.
