Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Loggins & Messina

Artist:Loggins & Messina
Song:Vahevala
Album:On Stage

Loggins & Messina were one of the most popular groups of the early 70s. But they weren't supposed to be a group at first. Jim Messina (born Dec. 5, 1947 in Maywood, CA) was a member of Buffalo Springfield and formed the country rock group Poco with Richie Furay. After Poco split up, Columbia hired Messina as a producer. Kenny Loggins (born Jan. 7, 1948 in Everett, WA and grew up in Alhambra, CA) was in the Los Angeles folk rock scene and wrote the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band hit House On Pooh Corner. Loggins signed with Columbia in 1970 and Messina produced his debut album. But when the album was finished, it was decided that Messina had contributed so much that his name should be on the cover. It was called Kenny Loggins With Jim Messina Sittin' In. A duo was born. Keyboard player Michael Omartian and sax player Jon Clarke were also big contributors to the album. The album did well enough on the pop album charts that the follow up Loggins & Messina was released in 1972. Your Mama Don't Dance reached #4 on the singles charts and the album reached #16 on the album charts. Loggins & Messina were also a very strong live act and the double LP On Stage was released in 1974 and reached #5 on the album charts. Vahevala was a song they liked to do in an extended version. The full 20 minute version is on the 1998 CD release. Loggins & Messina split up in 1976. Kenny Loggins has had a very successful solo career. Jim Messina wasn't that successful as a solo artist but he owns a very successful songwriters workshop. Loggins & Messina reunited for a tour in 2005 and the CD & DVD Sittin' In Again at the Santa Barbera Bowl was released by Rhino in Nov. 2005. This performance of Vahevala is from that DVD.
