Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Souljahz

Artist:Souljahz
Song:All Around The World
Album:The Fault Is History

In 2002, it looked like the gospel hip hop trio Souljahz would be able to build a bridge between the Christian and hip hop communities. But record company politics got in the way and they have relaunched as a duo. Souljahz is a family group with singer Rachael Washington and her rapper brothers Joshu'a Washington & Je'Kob Washington. They performed their mix of gospel, soul and hip hop in their native San Diego and got the attention of another San Diego resident. That would be gospel superstar Tonex. Tonex's connections got Souljahz a contract with Warner Bros. and The Fault Is History was released in Aug. 2002. Rachael was 17 at the time. The Washingtons write and produce all their own songs and Rachael's vocals make for a good counterpoint for the rapping. Souljahz made an especially big splash in the Contemporary Christian market and won a couple of Dove awards. All Around The World should have been a much bigger hit. It's got a great hook and an inspirational message. When Souljahz was ready to record their follow up, the management they dealt with at Warners was gone and the new management wasn't crazy about Souljahz. This happens all the time in the music business. They left Warners. Joshu'a left and Je'Kob and Rachael relaunched in 2007 as The Washington Projects. They released Commanders Of The Resistance on their own label in Nov. 2007 and have recently released a Christmas album. They're still young so they still have a chance but getting dropped by Warners was a tough blow. Here's Souljahz performing All Around The World on the 2002 Top Of The World Jam. You won't see this on Youtube.
