RIP Pop Winans

Gospel music patriarch David "Pop" Winans died today at age 76. He had been in a Nashville hospice since suffering a stroke and a heart attack in October. His wife Dolores "Mom" Winans was at his bedside. Though Pop did sing and he was nominated for a Grammy for his 1999 CD Uncensored, he was mostly known as the father of the world famous Winans siblings. Pop was a great singer and he was a member of a gospel quartet when he was younger. But with ten kids, he had to make a living. So he worked as a car salesman, cab driver, barber and of course a preacher. When his four sons became The Winans in the early 80s, he became their manager. He also recorded as a duo with Mom and also went on the Winans Family tours in the 90s. So how many Winans children are there? There are ten. Most of them are well known to gospel fans. The oldest is David. He's a guitarist. Then there's Ron (The Winans), Marvin (The Winans), Carvin (The Winans), Michael (The Winans), Daniel (mostly a producer), BeBe & CeCe, and Angie & Debbie (they have recorded as a duo). And you have the third generation with Winans Phase 2. That's Pop Winans legacy and that's how he will be remembered. Here's a clip from a 1994 Arsenio Hall show when the Winans Family was on tour. That's Pop in the back row wearing the blue suit. I'm sure he got a real kick out of performing with everybody. RIP Pop Winans.
