Jango Song Of The Day-Carl Stalling

Artist:Carl Stalling
Song:Satan's Waitin'
Album:The Carl Stalling Project Vol. 2: More Music From Warner Bros. Cartoons 1929-1957

Most music fans won't be familiar with Carl Stalling but film fans and especially animation fans know that Stalling wrote and arranged the scores for all the Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies produced at Warner Bros. from 1935-57. So if you've seen a Bugs Bunny cartoon, you've heard his music. He was born Nov. 10, 1891 in Lexington, MO and got his start playing organ for silent films at the Isis Theatre in Kansas City. Guess who else lived in Kansas City? That's right, Walt Disney. Disney brought Stalling to Hollywood and Stalling created his "ticking" system that allowed orchestra members to keep in tempo by listening to the beat through headphones. Stalling left Disney after two year when animator Ub Iwerks started his own studio and then went with Iwerks to work for Warners producer Leon Schlesinger in 1935. Stalling remained at Warners until his retirement in 1957. So how did his music end up on CD? When Warners produced the Looney Tunes 50th anniversary TV special, they did a gag segment offering The Best Of Carl Stalling CD. Of course there was no such thing but they got so many requests, they decided to do it for real. They hired veteran record producer Hal Willner to put it together along with Warner staff animator Greg Ford and animation historian Will Friedwald. Willner had produced the 1988 CD Stay Awake comp of Disney cartoon songs. The first CD did so well that Vol. 2 was released in 1995. This clip is from the 1954 Tweety & Sylvester cartoon Satan's Waitin'. I guess it could have been subtitled Sylvester Goes To Hell. Carl Stalling retired in 1957 and was replaced by his long time assistant Milt Franklyn. Stalling died Nov. 29, 1972 at age 81. The version of Satan's Waitin' that you see on TV has the ending chopped. So here's the complete version of Satan's Waitin' directed by Friz Freleng with music by Carl Stalling. You can get that and many other great cartoons on the Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVD box sets. I have all six volumes.
