Jango Song Of The Day-The Cascades

Artist:The Cascades
Song:Rhythm Of The Rain
Album:Quadrophenia: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

The 1963 top five hit Rhythm Of The Rain was the one big hit for the vocal group The Cascades. The group started as The Silver Strands in 1960. The were all in the US Navy stationed on the USS Ticonderoga based in San Diego. They recruited lead singer John Gummoe and became The Thundernotes. Other members were Eddie Snyder on guitar, David Szabo on keyborads, Dave Stevens on bass and Dave Wilson on drums. They recorded some demos which landed on the Warner Bros. subsidiary Valiant Records. The label was owned by veteran arranger Barry DeVorzon. The group signed and were renamed The Cascades after a box of detergent. Rhythm Of The Rain was their second single and reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. Gummoe wrote the song. Perry Botkin wrote the arrangement and studio aces Hal Blaine, Carol Kaye and Glen Campbell played on the record. The Cascades follow up singles didn't catch on but they did very well in England and Australia. They continued recording until John Gummoe left to go solo in 1967. He had a band called Kentucky Express. It's still a very memorable song and it's on the soundtrack for the film Quadrophenia which is a great film anyway. You may recall a recent cover of Rhythm Of The Rain by Aussie actor/pop star Jason Donovan. A version of The Cascades has toured the oldies circuit for years and Gummoe leads a version of the group today. Here are The Cascades performing Rhythm Of The Rain.
