Jango Song Of The Day-The Cox Family

Artist:The Cox Family
Song:I Am Weary, Let Me Rest
Album:Original Motion Picture Soundtrack: O Brother, Where Art Thou

The family bluegrass group The Cox Family are one of several bluegrass acts to get a big boost from the Coen Brothers 2000 film O Brother, Where Art Thou. Unfortunately personal tragedy has rendered them inactive. I think bluegrass fans will enjoy them. They are from Cotton Valley, LA led by father Willard Cox on fiddle. Oldest daughter Evelyn Cox plays guitar, Lynn Cox plays bass, son Sidney Cox plays banjo & dobro and Suzanne Cox plays mandolin. And of course they all sing and it's those harmonies that will hook you. They had been performing since the mid-70s but got a big boost when they mey Alison Krauss. Alison got them a contract with Rounder Records and produced their two albums on the label. Adam Duritz of Counting Crows liked The Cox Family so much that he took them on tour to open up for them. This earned them a contract with Asylum Records for their 1996 CD Just When We're Thinking It's Over. They continued to gain acclaim when T-Bone Burnett had them record I Am Weary, Let Me Rest and they appeared on the Down From The Mountain concert. Sadly, Willard Cox and wife Marie were seriously injured in a car accident in July 2000 and that took The Cox Family off the road. Marie Cox died in Feb. 2009. So I don't know if The Cox Family will ever return but I know bluegrass fans will enjoy their music Here's The Cox Family performing I Am Weary, Let Me Rest on the Down From The Mountain concert.
