Jango Song Of The Day-The Spencer Davis Group

Artist:The Spencer Davis Group
Song:Gimme Some Lovin'
Album:Gimme Some Lovin'

The Spencer Davis Group had a top ten hit with Gimme Some Lovin' in 1967 but the main value of the group was to introduce legendary singer songwriter Steve Winwood. Guitarist Spencer Davis (born July 17, 1939 in Swansea, Wales) was part of the Birmingham music scene in 1963 when he spotted a group called Muff Woody featuring bassist Muff Winwood (born June 15, 1943 in Birmingham) and his brother Steve Winwood (born May 12, 1948 in Birmingham) on keyboards and vocals. Along with drummer Pete York (born Aug. 15, 1942 in Yorkshire, England), they called themselves The Rhythm & Blues Band and played R & B covers on the local club circuit. Island Records owner Chris Blackwell signed them after spotting them in a local club. They had some success in England before United Artists picked them up and started releasing their music in 1966. The version of Gimme Some Lovin' that was released in the US was different from the UK version It was more uptempo and reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. The beginning of the end of The Spencer Davis Group was when Steve Winwood left to form Traffic and of course he's also had a significant solo career. Muff Winwood went to work as an A & R man for Island. This rerelease on CD from Sundazed has several bonus tracks. Davis tried to keep the band going but they split up in 1969. Davis moved to Catalina Island in California and still performs today. Here's the video for Gimme Some Lovin' by The Spencer Davis Group.
