Jango Song Of The Day-The Uniques

Artist:The Uniques
Song:You Ain't Tuff
Album:Nuggets: Original Artyfacts For the First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968

The Uniques were a very obscure garage band from Shreveport, LA. Because of Rhino's Nuggets comps, there is still some interest in them. But they never broke through nationally. They are not to be confused with the Jamaican group also called The Uniques. The leader of The Uniques was Joe Stampley (born June 6, 1943 in Springhill, LA). Country music fans will be familiar with him. The Uniques started playing in Shreveport and gained a following in the south. This led to a contract with Paula Records. Like a lot of regional record companies, Paula had problems distributing nationally. The Uniques 1966 album Uniquely Yours was their first release. The label was a division of Jewel Records which was more of an R & B label. The Uniques had some minor chart success with songs like Not Too Long Ago, All These Things and You Ain't Tuff. And they even performed You Ain't Tuff in the film Where The Action Is. But they were never able to break through to a national audience. So after four albums, Stampley disbanded The Uniques and signed with ABC-Dot Records in 1971. He was a big country music star in the 70s and even had a #1 country hit with All These Things in 1976 after he moved to Epic Records. Stampley is semi-retired now. Sundazed Records has released Uniquely Yours on vinyl only. So the best way to get You Ain't Tuff on CD is on Rhino's Nuggets box set. It's a box set you should have anyway if you're into this kind of music. Here's The Uniques performing You Ain't Tuff in the 1966 film Where The Action Is.
