Jango Song Of The Day-Soul Brothers Six

Artist:Soul Brothers Six
Song:Some Kind Of Wonderful
Album:This Is Soul

Most of you are probably familiar with Grand Funk Railroad's 1974 smash it Some Kind Of Wonderful. But you probably don't know that it was originally recorded by Soul Brothers Six in 1967. The song was written by lead singer John Ellison (born Aug. 11, 1941 in Montgomery, WV). At age 18, Ellison moved to Rochester, NY and was a hairstylist while he sang on the side. He got together with Charles, Sam, Harry and Moses Armstrong  and Vonell Benjamin and Soul Brothers Six was born. They recorded a couple of singles and moved to Philadelphia. Harry & Sam left and were replaced by Lester Peleman and Joe Johnson. They signed with Atlantic but Some Kind Of Wonderful barely dented the Billboard Hot 100 and Atlantic dropped them. The entire group left and Ellison formed a new version of Soul Brothers Six and recorded a few singles in the early 70s. Fortunately Ellison made a lot of money from Grand Funk's smash hit version of Some Kind Of Wonderful. He moved to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and started his own spice company. He has recorded occasionally and still performs today. This Is Soul is a rerelease of a classic Atlantic soul comp from 1969. It's got bonus tracks and every one is a winner. Here's John Ellison performing Some Kind Of Wonderful at the 2008 Hamilton Music Awards.
