Jango Song Of The Day-The Easybeats

Artist:The Easybeats
Song:Friday On My Mind
Album:Nuggets: A Classic Collection From The Psychedelic Sixties

Though The Easybeats are perceived as a British Invasion band and Friday On My Mind is frequently found on British Invasion comp CDs, they actually lived in Australia. They were very popular there but Friday On My Mind was their only international hit. None of The Easybeats were born in Australia. Lead singer Stevie Wright and drummer Gordon "Snowy" Fleet were from England, rhythm guitarist George Young was from Scotland and lead guitarist Harry Vanda and bassist Dick Diamonde were from The Netherlands. Sweet was from Liverpool and was a member of The Mojos. So they're all living in Sydney in 1964 and form The Easybeats. They signed with Albert Productions which was owned by Aussie music publisher J. Albert & Sons and signed to EMI's Parlophone label. They had several hits in Australia in 1965. They signed a US contract with United Artists and moved to England in late 1966. They recorded some songs with Ted Albert in England but didn't like the results. So renowned producer Shel Talmy was brought in. Friday On My Mind was their biggest hit and reached #16 on the Billboard Hot 100. Vanda & Young wrote the song. It's considered a classic of early psychedelia and you can get it on this Nuggets comp. David Bowie covered Friday On My Mind on his 1973 album Pin Up. The Easybeats split up in 1969 mainly because Vanda & Young wanted to start their own production company. And of course George Young produced AC/DC which was led by his brothers and they were behind the one shot group Flash & The Pan. So The Easybeats were pioneers of the Aussie music scene. Here are The Easybeats performing Friday On My Mind on the German TV show Big Beat 1967.
