Jango Song Of The Day-New York City

Artist:New York City
Song:I'm Doin' Fine Now
Album:I'm Doin' Fine Now

So when you listen to this 1973 top twenty hit, you might think it's a long lost song by legendary Philly Soul group The Spinners who were actually from Detroit. But no, this is by New York City. The common denominator was legendary Philly Soul producer Thom Bell. I'm Doin' Fine Now was New York City's biggest hit and some of their other songs charted. They only recorded two albums. The group had a long history in the New York doo wop and R & B scene. Claude Johnson was a member of The Genies and was one half of the duo Don & Juan (What's Your Name). John Brown sang with The Five Satins, The Cadillacs and The Moonglows. Lead singer Tim McQueen and Eddie Schell sang in various groups. In 1972, producer Wes Farrell (The Partridge Family) was starting his new label Chelsea Records. New York City was originally called Tri-Boro Exchange and had released a single on Buddah Records. He brought them to Chelsea and changed the name of the group to New York City. And he asked Thom Bell to produce them. Bell started out as producer of The Delfonics and in 1973 was very successful with The Spinners. He's a legend of Philly Soul. They hit the jackpot with the first single I'm Doin' Fine Now which reached #19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #14 on the R & B Singles chart. Bell wrote the song with Sherman Marshall. Subsequent singles and a second album didn't catch on New York City split up. But if you're a fan of similar groups like The Spinners, I think you'll enjoy this comp from Collectables. And I'm Doin' Fine Now is on plenty of various artists comps. Here's a video of I'm Doin' Fine Now by New York City.
