Sarah Kaufman vs Marloes Coenen set for Oct. 9 Strikeforce show

Marloes Coenen
I'm sure you already know that it was confirmed yesterday that Sarah Kaufman will defend her 135lb Championship against Marloes Coenen Oct. 9 in San Jose. This match was announced a few weeks ago. I have no problem if Marloes wants to drop to 135 and I have no problem with this match. But I do have a problem with it as a title match because it cheapens the title. Marloes is a ten year veteran and a pioneer of MMA. But she has never fought at 135 and that makes this match one big question mark. I dunno. Maybe I'm old school and matchmaking doesn't have to make sense anymore. When a reporter asks Strikeforce owner Scott Coker why he made this match, what would he say? I've seen him answer those questions before and his answer is usually "Well, we were just sitting around shooting the breeze and we just liked the idea." What kind of matchmaking is that? The original plan was for Marloes to drop to 135 to participate in the recent tournament. But she decided in July not to drop to 135 and Miesha Tate replaced her in the tournament. It was the very next day that Coker announced that Marloes will get a 135lb title shot. It makes no sense especially since she has never fought at that weight. When a match is made and the first question from reporters is "Huh?" or "WTF", that's poor matchmaking because the actual hype for the match takes a back seat to those questions. Matchmaking should be logical and shouldn't need explanation. There's no logical explanation for this title match and it certainly gives the impression that Strikeforce doesn't put much thought into their matchmaking.
