AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Barry Mann

Artist:Barry Mann
Song:Who Put The Bomp (In The Bomp, Bomp, Bomp)
Album:...And The Answer Is: Great Rock 'N' Roll Answer Discs From the 50's & 60's Vol. 2

Barry Mann had his only hit single as a recording artist in 1961 with Who Put The Bomp. Of course Mann along with wife Cynthia Weil have had a long and distinguished career as songwriters. Barry Mann was born Barry Imberman Feb. 9, 1939 in Brooklyn, NY. He started out in 1959 working for Don Kirschner's Aldon Music in the Brill Building in New York City. He met Cynthia there and they were married in 1961. Plenty of songwriters worked in the Brill Building including Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry etc. etc. Mann's first hit as a songwriter was She Says (Oom Dooby Doom) by The Diamonds in 1959 which he wrote with Goffin. They also wrote Who Put The Bomp. The song parodies the kind of nonsense lyrics used in many doo wop songs. The doo wop group The Halos sang backup. They also sang backup on Curtis Lee's Pretty Little Angel Eyes. The song was inspired by the success of songs like Blue Moon by The Marcels and Rama Lama Ding Dong by The Edsels. So a song that was clearly a gag reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1961. There was also an answer song called I Put The Bomp by Frankie Lymon. Those and other answer songs are on this various artists comp from Bear Family. Barry Mann has recorded occasionally but he's mostly known for hundreds of songwriting credits and he continues to do that today. Here's a video for Who Put The Bomp by Barry Mann.
