AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Juice Newton

Artist:Juice Newton
Song:Angel Of The Morning
Album:Anthology

Though Judith "Juice" Newton is perceived as a country music artist, she actually had success on the pop charts first. Angel Of The Morning is one of two top ten pop hits from the early 80s and it was her breakthrough hit. She was born Feb. 18, 1952 in Lakehurst, NJ and grew up in Virginia Beach, VA. She started playing coffeehouses while attending Foothills College in Los Altos Hills, CA. She met songwriter guitarist Otha Young and formed Dixie Peach which would eventually become Juice Newton & Silver Spur. They moved to Los Angeles and signed with RCA in 1975. After two unsuccessful country albums, they were dropped. Juice and Young formed a new version of Silver Spur and Juice signed with Capitol Records as a solo artist. Juice's first charted single It's A Heartache was a much bigger hit for Bonnie Tyler. She had a couple of top 40 country hits with her 1979 album Take Heart but it wasn't until her 1981 album Juice that she struck gold. The first single Angel Of The Morning reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #22 on the Country Singles chart. Of course the song was a top ten hit hit for Merrilee Rush in 1968. It was written by veteran songwriter Chip Taylor who is the brother of actor Jon Voight. Queen Of Hearts was an even bigger hit. That song was written by pedal steel guitarist Hank DeVito and originally recorded by British rocker Dave Edmunds. Then The Sweetest Thing was her first #1 country hit. That's an Otha Young song that was originally recorded in 1975. Juice moved to RCA in 1984 and continued to have success on the country charts until she was dropped in 1989. This comp from the reissue label Renaissance covers all her 80s recordings. Juice Newton took time off to raise a family and hasn't recorded much. But she released a new CD Duet: Friends and Memories on Fuel 2000 in October. This includes duets with Willie Nelson, Frankie Valli and Glen Campbell among others. Here's the video for Angel Of The Morning by Juice Newton.
