AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Garbage

Artist:Garbage
Song:Stupid Girl
Album:Absolute Garbage

Garbage was one of the surprise success stories of the 90s. Stupid Girl was their biggest hit. The group started out as three veteran musicians messing around in the studio and became a band when they hired singer Shirley Manson. Garbage is from Madison, WI. In 1993, drummer Butch Vig was already known as a producer for bands like Nirvana. But he had owned his own recording studio in Madison since 1984 with guitarist Steve Marker and he had been in the bands Spooner and Firetown with bassist Duke Erikson. So they formed a new band initially with Vig singing. Someone said the music sounded "like garbage" hence the band name. For commercial reasons, the guys thought hiring a female lead singer was a good idea. Shirley Manson is from Edinburgh, Scotland and was lead singer of Angelfish. Marker saw their video and when Angelfish split up, she joined Garbage. They sent out demos and when Vow got radio play, that earned them a contract with Almo Sounds. This label was started by A & M Records owners Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss after A & M was sold to Polygram. Their 1995 debut CD Garbage reached #20 on the Billboard Hot 200 and went 2X Platinum. Stupid Girl reached #24 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has been their biggest single to date. Stupid Girl is based on a drum sample from The Clash classic Train In Vain. Garbage has continued to have success and have a new CD scheduled for release in 2011. This comp is a good intro to their music. Butch Vig has returned to producing other bands and is currently working on a new Foo Fighters CD. Shirley Manson was supposed to release a solo CD but it was shelved and won't be released. Here's the video for Stupid Girl by Garbage.
