AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Eddy Grant

Artist:Eddy Grant
Song:Electric Avenue
Album:The Very Best Of Eddy Grant: Road To Reparation

British Reggae artist Eddy Grant was a fixture on the British charts when he crossed over to the mainstream with the 1983 top five hit Electric Avenue. He now lives in Barbados and continues to record on his own label. He was born Mar. 5, 1948 in Plaisance, Guyana and moved to London, England with his family in 1960. His band The Equals had several modest hits in the 60s. Grant left The Equals in 1971 when he burned out and suffered a collapsed lung. He started his own label Ice Records and seemed content producing other artists until he returned in 1977 with the album Message Man. This was darker and more African influenced than the pop sound he recorded for The Equals. He became a regular on the British charts but Electric Avenue became a hit in the US when it reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. His only other mainstream hit was the theme from the 1984 film Romancing The Stone. Eddy Grant moved to Barbados soon after and continues to record his own music and release back catalogs of calypso legends and produce other artists on his own label Ice Records. He even created a new hybrid sound called Ringbang and had a hit with a remix of Electric Avenue in 2001. This budget comp is a good intro to his music. Here's the video for Electric Avenue by Eddy Grant.
