AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Toto Bona Lokua

Artist:Toto Bona Lokua
Song:Lisanga
Album:Toto Bona Lokua

African jazz bassist Richard Bona is probably the best known of the three musicians on this 2004 CD of African jazz. Lokua Kanza is from the Congo and Gerald Toto is French. Bona was born Oct. 28, 1967 in Minta, Cameroon. He moved to France and made his name in French jazz clubs. He moved to New York in 1995 and still lives there. He worked with various jazz artists and was Harry Belafonte's musical director on a 1998 tour. Bona recorded three CDs for Columbia from 1999-2001. He also toured with Pat Matheny. The other two guys aren't as well known. Lokua Kanza was born 1958 in the Congo and has recorded CDs for Universal Europe. I think he lives in France. Gerald Toto was born in 1967 n Saint Cloud, France and is unknown outside France. The three recorded this CD in 2004 for the small French label No Format! and it was picked up in the US by the jazz label Sunny Side. It appears Kanza wrote Lisanga and all three guys sing lead. Lisanga got some buzz when it turned up on a Putumayo comp. But the CD is available and is worth checking out especially if you like African jazz. Richard Bona currently records for Universal Jazz France. So does Lokua Kanza. Gerald Toto has a new CD coming out this year. It wouldn't surprise me if they recorded together in the future. Here's Toto Bona Lokua performing Lisanga 2008.
