AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Rolling Stones

Artist:The Rolling Stones
Song:Get Off My Cloud
Album:Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass)

Get Off My Cloud was the second number one hit for The Rolling Stones in 1965. Of course Satisfaction was the first. Get Off My Cloud really established them as a major force. If the follow up to Satisfaction flops, maybe they do too. The appeal of The Rolling Stones was they were the anti-Beatles. They liked being bad boys. They started out as a cover band but really started to take shape when Mick Jagger and Keith Richards started writing the band's songs. The two were childhood friends who met up later and decided to form a band. Dick Taylor was the third member. He would later be a member of The Pretty Things. They found Brian Jones, Ian Stewart and Charlie Watts playing with Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated. The band name came from a Muddy Waters song. The original 1962 lineup was Jagger, Richards, Jones, Stewart, Taylor and drummer Tony Chapman. When the band went away from blues covers and more towards rock & roll, Taylor and Chapman were replaced by Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts. Then they signed with manager Andrew Loog Oldham and he signed them to Decca. Their first few singles were all covers. They had their first #1 hit in England with Bobby Womack's It's All Over Now. Oldham encouraged them to write their own songs. Their US label London Records wanted that too. So when their cover of Willie Dixon's Little Red Rooster topped the British charts, London declined to release it in the US. The Last Time was the first Jagger Richards song to top the British charts and it reached #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965. Satisfaction did even better. It was a worldwide number one hit. Get Off My Cloud was the follow up and did just as well. Jagger said the song was a response to people bugging them about what they would do after Satisfaction. Richards said he felt the song was too rushed. Get Off My Cloud was released only as a single. London put it on the 1966 odds and ends album December's Children and and then it was on Big Hits which was their first hits comp. You can still get it on CD. The Rolling Stones continued to have great success until a 1967 drug bust. And in 1968 they had to fire Brian Jones due to his drug habit and of course he died in a swimming pool. Of course I could go on but I really wanted to cover their early days. Obviously The Rolling Stones are still around but this is how they started. Here are The Rolling Stones performing Get Off My Cloud on Top Of The Pops 1965.
