AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Sue Foley

Artist:Sue Foley
Song:Queen Bee
Album:Queen Bee: The Antones Collection

Canadian blues guitarist Sue Foley became a big deal when she moved to Austin in the 90s and recorded for the record label owned by famed club owner Clifford Antone. This cover of Slim Harpo's King Bee is one of her best known songs. She just calls it Queen Bee. She was born Mar. 29, 1968 in Ottawa. She got interested in the blues when she went to a James Cotton concert at age 15. She took up the guitar and played in various bands and moved to Vancouver in the mid-80s. In 1990, she sent a demo to Antone's Records. Clifford Antone owned the famed Austin blues club Antone's for many years and started a record label in 1987. He was a big part of the development of the blues scene in Austin. So he signed Sue Foley and her 1992 debut CD Young Girl Blues did very well. Queen Bee is on that CD. The appeal of Sue Foley is she's this cute girl who one would expect would sing pop songs. Instead she swings her axe like an old pro. And she's a worldwide draw on the blues circuit. Sue recorded three CDs for Antone Records and this comp is a good intro to her music. She got pregnant in 1997 and moved back to Ottawa. She recorded three CDs for Shanachie and now records for the German label Ruf Records owned by Luther Allison's manager Thomas Ruf. She last recorded solo in 2006. But last year she recorded an CD of duets with New Jersey bluesman Peter Karp called He Said She Said on Blind Pig Records. She first met Karp at the 2006 Ottawa Blues Festival. Sue has also written a book profiling female blues artists called Guitar Woman. So if you're a blues fan, you want to check out Sue Foley. Here is Sue Foley performing Queen Bee at The Underground in Koln, Germany from her 2005 DVD Live In Europe.
