AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Ian Thomas

Artist:Ian Thomas
Song:Painted Ladies
Album:Made In Canada Vol. 2 1969-74: Into the 70's

Canadian singer songwriter Ian Thomas has been around a long time and done a lot of different things. But he is probably best known for the 1974 hit single Painted Ladies. It was his only hit in the US. He was born July 23, 1950 in Hamilton, ON and I'm sure most folks know he is the younger brother of SCTV comic Dave Thomas. He started out in 1970 with the group Tranquility Base and they had a top 30 hit in Canada with If You're Lookin'. Thomas went to work as a producer for the CBC. But he got the music bug and signed with GRT Records in Canada. Painted Ladies was his first single and it reached #4 on the RPM 100 in Canada. Chrysalis Records picked it up for US distribution and it reached #34 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was his only hit in the US though he did have some chart success in Canada. You can get Painted Ladies on this various artists comp of Canadian hits from RCA Records. Thomas continued to record solo but he has done all kinds of other things. He has composed music for several Canadian TV movies. He was also a regular as Dougie Franklin on the popular 90s TV series The Red Green Show. And he has occasionally appeared with his brother on SCTV. In the 90s he had chart success in Canada with The Boomers. And currently he performs with Lunch At Allen's with Murray McLachlan, Marc Jordan and Cindy Church. They released a new album last year. That's a lot of stuff for a one hit wonder. Here's Ian Thomas performing Painted Ladies at the Mountainview Music Fest Carstairs, AB 2009.
