AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Johnny Kemp

Artist:Johnny Kemp
Song:Just Got Paid
Album:Soul Hits of the 80's

Johnny Kemp had brief success with the 1988 top ten hit Just Got Paid. He had a second chart hit so he isn't quite a one hit wonder. But I think most fans will only remember Just Got Paid. Kemp was part of the New Jack Swing movement of the late 80s. He was born 1959 in Nassau, Bahamas and performed in clubs there until he moved to New York City in 1979 with the band Kinky Fox. Kemp signed with Columbia Records in 1986 and had a minor R & B hit with Just Another Lover. But he really hit the jackpot with the 1988 hit Just Got Paid from the album Secrets Of Flying. Just Got Paid topped the R & B chart and reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Kemp wrote the song with arranger Gene Griffin and it was one of the first big hits produced by Teddy Riley. So the song was a very early New Jack Swing hit. You can get Just Got Paid on this Sony 3CD various artists budget comp. Kemp's other hit Birthday Suit reached #39 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1989. It was on the soundtrack of the film Sing. That's the last time Johnny Kemp recorded. He went back to studio work as a background vocalist and he still does that today. Kemp appeared on Keith Sweat's 2007 DVD Sweat Hotel Live which was a reunion of sorts of New Jack Swing artists of the 80s. So I guess Johnny Kemp is now a nostalgia act. Here's the video for Just Got Paid by Johnny Kemp.
