AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Collective Soul

Artist:Collective Soul
Song:Shine
Album:7even Year Itch: Greatest Hits 1994-2001

Collective Soul had their breakthrough hit and biggest mainstream hit with Shine in 1994. They had a pretty good run in the mid-90s as an album band and then faded. Collective Soul are from Stockbridge, GA. Lead singer and main songwriter Ed Roland studied music composition at Berklee in Boston. In the 80s, he worked as a recording engineer at Reel 2 Reel Studios in Stockbridge. He also led the bands Ed-E and Marching Two Step. After rejection from several record companies, Roland disbanded Marching Two Step. While recording demos intended to get Roland a publishing deal, an Atlanta radio station played Shine and it soon became their most requested song. Roland then formed Collective Soul with his brother Dean Roland on rhythm guitar, Ross Childress on lead guitar, Will Turpin on bass and Shane Evans on drums. They released their debut album Hints, Allegations and Things Left Unsaid independently and then signed with Atlantic Records. Shine was already charting nationally. Roland wanted to re-record the album but Atlantic didn't want to wait and re-released the original album with no changes. The album was certified 2XPlatinum and Shine reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100. The video was in heavy rotation on MTV. It's still their biggest success to date. Shine was interpreted as a Christian song so it did well in the CCM market. But Roland denied that Collective Soul was a Christian band. They recorded five albums for Atlantic. The 1995 CD Collective Soul was certified 3XPlatinum but subsequent album sales declined and by 2000, Collective Soul faded and left Atlantic after the 2000 CD Blender. You can get all their Atlantic hits on this budget comp. Childress left in 2001 and was replaced by Joel Kosche. Evans left in 2003 and was replaced by Ryan Hoyle. After two albums on their own label, Collective Soul signed with Roadrunner Records and released Rabbit in 2009. They are currently touring but no news yet on any new music. I think they have to find a new drummer. Here's the video for Shine by Collective Soul.
