AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Matchbox 20

Artist:Matchbox 20
Song: 3AM
Album:Yourself or Someone Like You

Matchbox 20 had a very  successful run in the late 90s. Their 1996 debut CD Yourself or Someone Like You is their best selling CD to date. When subsequent CDs didn't sell as well, the group went on hiatus and they have reunited and will release a new CD this year. Matchbox 20 is from Orlando, FL. Lead singer and main songwriter Rob Thomas, rhythm guitarist Paul Doucette and bassist Brian Yale were members of the early 90s band Tabitha's Secret. When two other members left the band, they were replaced by lead guitarist Kyle Cook and drummer Adam Gaynor and changed their name to Matchbox 20. After recording some demos with Collective Soul producer Matt Serletic, they signed with Atlantic Records. Their debut CD Yourself or Someone Like You sold slowly but eventually was certified Diamond. 3AM was the second single and reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart. While recording their second album, lead singer Rob Thomas scored as a guest vocalist on the 1998 Carlos Santana smash hit Smooth. And I think he was not well known at the time and a lot of fans bought Yourself or Someone Like You after Smooth was a hit. So the CD had a second life. It's available as a budget CD. They recorded two more albums that didn't sell as well and the band went on hiatus in 2002 so Rob Thomas could launch a solo career. They reformed for a tour in 2007 and then went on hiatus again so Thomas could go on a solo tour. They have since reunited again and will release a new CD North in Sept. 2012. I think it will do OK but it is unlikely to reach the heights of Yourself or Someone Like You. Here's the video for 3AM by Matchbox 20.
