AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Stephan Crump with Rosetta Trio

Artist:Stephan Crump with Rosetta Trio
Song:The Leaves, The Rain
Album:Reclamation

Bassist Stephan Crump is best known as long time bassist for pianist Vijay Iyer. He also works as a sideman and composes music for film and TV. In recent years he has recorded as a leader and the Rosetta Trio seems to be a more concerted effort to establish himself as a leader. Crump is from Memphis. Both parents were amateur musicians. His dad was an architect and played drums on the side and his mom played piano. Crump studied piano and played alto sax before settling on bass and playing in bands as a teen. After earning a Bachelor of Music degree at Amherst College in 1994, he moved to New York and toured with The Tommy Dorsey Band before joining the band of veteran trumpeter Marvin Stamm. His work with Vijay Iyer and other bands has labeled him as a versatile sideman who can play anything. He has toured with all kinds of acts including legendary bluesman Johnny Copeland. He also composes music for films. He recorded his first CD as a leader in 1997. Crump formed The Rosetta Trio and with British born acoustic guitarist Liberty Ellman and electric guitarist Jamie Fox and Reclamation was released on Sunny Side Records in 2010. So you'll notice there is no drummer but I don't think you'll care. Crump has played on Ellman's recordings so they know what they're doing. While leading this band, Crump continues to be an in demand and reliable sideman. He's very busy. Here's Stephan Crump with Rosetta Trio performing The Leaves, The Rain at The Jazz Gallery in New York City Sept. 2009.
